About Us

Experience and Expertise Since 1993

horticon® was established in April 2002. As a horticultural engineer, Dipl.-Ing. agr. Hagen Knafla worked for various companies in the international substrate industry since 1993. His activities included sales, technical consulting, and product development in international production facilities.

Especially in the field of alternative raw materials, extensive development work has been carried out for 30 years, and as a member of the Quality Association for Substrates for Plant Cultivation, as well as in other association bodies, Hagen Knafla has been involved in committee work for many years. Particularly in the current situation, where more and more peat substitutes are being sought and found, expertise in the field of coconut, wood-fiber, etc. has a positive effect on your company.

With increasing recognition, the demand from various substrate producers and the trade for competent and cross-divisional support in the field of product management also grew. Since the beginning of his self-employment in 2002, internationally active companies in Germany and abroad have also been among his clientele. This includes family businesses as well as medium-sized companies and larger corporations.

Comprehensive Product Management for Industry and Trade

From raw material inspection to the finished product — we accompany the entire value creation process.

Services for the Substrate Industry

Peat, growing media and substrate manufacturers

Long-term thinking companies in the peat, growing media and substrate industry rely on customer satisfaction. Years of satisfactory deliveries can be ruined by small errors in individual cases — quality controls at individually varying levels are vital for survival.

In addition to competitive prices through optimal raw material selection and combination, the quality of the end product is of decisive importance in the long term. One step towards giving the customer a high degree of security are external quality systems such as RAL or RHP quality assurance.

  • Initial inspection of production processes and end products
  • Declaration checks according to DüMV
  • Analytics through recognized external laboratories with interpretation
  • Fill quantity controls according to EN 12580
  • Product development and recipe optimization
  • Establishment of internal quality assurance systems
  • Control of co-packing products
  • Support with RAL and RHP quality assurance or HORTICERT certification
  • Consulting on EUDR and EU Fertilizing Products Regulation
  • Staff training (EN 12580, quality testing procedures)
  • Creation and translation of technical brochures
  • Project management

Services for Trade

DIY stores, specialist retailers & garden centers

Growing media and soil improvers are an important revenue pillar in both specialist markets and DIY stores with garden centers, despite the seasonal character. Price and quality concepts must be consistently offered according to different customer requirements.

Regardless of the price level, functionality must be guaranteed. Only a small proportion of customers contact the garden center when products such as potting soils do not meet expectations — in most cases the product is simply avoided in the future. This is particularly damaging for private labels that are also used in other areas.

Out of responsibility towards the customer, buyers at headquarters and stores should strive for supplier-independent, regular control of their own products.

  • Product testing according to your individual specifications
  • Fill quantity controls according to EN 12580
  • Analytics and interpretation
  • Declaration checks according to DüMV
  • Private label management and support
  • Establishment of internal QA systems
  • Project management: raw materials, products, packaging
  • Technical interface between industry and trade

Procurement, analysis and reporting from a single source — without having to build up your own specialist staff.
